Solution B: KI (4g) in AcOH (10mL) and H2O (20mL)

Mix Solns. A and B and dilute to 100mL with H2O.

Dragendorff's Reagent is a solution of potassium bismuth iodide that is used to determine the presence of alkaloids. It does this by producing an orange colored precipitate when it reacts with alkaloids. Dragendorff’s reagent is commonly used in thin layer chromatography as a spray reagent that causes colorless compounds, alkaloids, to change to colored compounds.
