随着近年来我国电影理论的发展和深入，电影研究的重点已经逐步从研究编导与作品向研究观众转移。电影观众学研究，成了越来越热门的话题。我国早期电影界由于长期实行计划经济，没有把电影作为特殊商品，电影的编创人员可以不管电影的发行，因此，忽视了对电影观众心理的研究与分析。由于长期忽视了对电影观众心理的研究，造成了中国许多影片疏远观众的现象，失去了市场竞争力。上海作为我国重要的产业基地，电影产业又曾经是中国电影产业的半壁江山，对上海电影观众的喜好研究有着更为重要的意义。早在改革开放之初，著名学者钟惦棐老师就提出了“我们必须理直气壮得研究电影艺术形式”，他对于电影艺术存在的要求，是多元而丰富的，认识价值、审美价值、娱乐价值的并置而不是排斥，显示了他的开阔眼光。注重电影艺术的技术指标和文化含量一直是电影创作不容忽视的，是与广大电影观众的喜好紧密联系在一起的。钟惦棐还试图以电影美学作为手段解释电影与观众的复杂关系，从而找出一些影响电影观众喜好的因素。
