人并游太学。后告归乡里，式谓元伯曰：“后二年当还，将过拜尊亲，见孺子焉。”
乃共克期日。后期方至，元伯具以白母，请设馔以候之。母曰：“二年之别，千
里结言，尔何相信之审耶？”曰：“巨卿信士，必不乖违。”母曰：“若然，当
为尔酝酒。”至期果到。升堂拜饮，尽欢而别。后元伯寝疾甚笃，同郡郅君章、
殷子征晨夜省视之。元伯临终，叹曰：“恨不见我死友。”子征曰：“吾与君章，
尽心于子，是非死友，复欲谁求？”元伯曰：“若二子者，吾生友耳；山阳范巨
卿，所谓死友也。”寻而卒。式忽梦见元伯，玄冕乘缨，屣履而呼曰：“巨卿，
吾以某日死，当以尔时葬，永归黄泉。子未忘我，岂能相及？”式恍然觉悟，悲
叹泣下，便服朋友之服，投其葬日，驰往赴之。未及到而丧已发引。既至圹，将
窆，而柩不肯进。其母抚之曰：“元伯，岂有望耶？”遂停柩。移时，乃见素车
白马，号哭而来。其母望之曰：“是必范巨卿也。”既至，叩丧言曰：“行矣元
伯，死生异路，永从此辞。”会葬者千人，咸为挥涕。式因执绋而引，柩于是乃
前。式遂留止冢次，为修坟树，然后乃去。

"Faithful friends
In the time of Han dynasty, there was once a man whose name was Fan Shi or Fan Juqing. He was born in the Jinxiang county (Shanyang). He and Zhang Shao (aka Zhang Yuanbo) from Runan were good friends. They learned together at the Taixue university. When they were going to return home, Fan Shi said to Zhang Shao, “After two years I will come to Luoyang again. I will go to the Runan and express my respects to your mother and see you.” They promised a date and returned to their hometown.
Two years later, the day was coming, and Zhang Shao told his mother about the promise. He wanted to prepare delicious food for Fan Shi. His mother said smiling, “My child, you and your friend had been apart for two years, and our hometown is far away from his city. Why do you really believe his promise?” Zhang Shao said, “Juqing is a faithful man, so I believe he will not abandon the promise.” His mother said, “Such being the case, I will brew rice wine at once for you.
