分析下这句话的结构和里面coded的用法

说蛾子的一句话：
The dust-like scales covering its wings are color coded to indicate the kinds of poison it has.
大意可能是：覆盖在翅膀上粉尘一样的鳞片是由颜色(块)排列的，这些颜色的排列指示了蛾子含有毒素的种类。
里面的“coded”有点难以理解，形容词？被动式？我只能肯定不是过去式...

如果是被动式的话，be动词就是are了，color夹在它俩中间作coded的状语?
are color coded是否也就等同于are coded by color?

color只有名词和动词两个词性，能不能放那里做状语？好像不能吧？
