Javier Fernander-Han is a great inspiration to young people all over the world. When most other teenagers in Houston (休斯敦), Texas (得克萨斯州), were fiddling on their Play Stations, Javier was busy trying to make the world a better place. This is something that he has been working on since he was nine years old.
It is even more unusual that he has been successful! Earlier this year, Javier entered the competition “Invent Your World Challenge* 2009,” which has a prize of US$20,000. Although there were lots of other good inventions entering into the competition, Javier won the first prize.
Javier calls his invention “VERSATILE (多功能系统)”— an algae-powered energy system. It combines technologies already available to treat waste, produce methane and bio-oil as fuel, grow food for people and animals, capture greenhouse gases, and create oxygen. The system actually uses algae and the power of the sun to make all this happen!
