主语是IT吗

"It was late in the evening when the accident happened at the corner of the street"请问这句话的主语是什么,为什么?

it 是主语。在这里它不是形式主语，因为是形式主语的话，把真正的主语替换它的位置句意应该依旧说的通，而这里把when从句代替it的位置后，句意不合语法逻辑。所以it是主语。it的用法：可以表示时间、距离、空间、天气、环境等等，在这里它就是指的时间，例如：
It 5 o'clock.现在5点了（it指时间）
It quiet in the classroom.教室里很安静（it指环境）
It is far from here.那离这里很远。（ it 指距离）

it 只是作为引导词
主语是 the accident happened at the corner of the street

when 引导时间状语从句，it做主语表示天色或时间。
