f I try to write a novel, I want it to be a novel in the best sense and not a string of short stories.If I write a short story , I want to feel that it is truly a short story in spirit as well as in form.If I want to write a novel I must ask whether my ideas are big enough ,and whether they are short story ideas or fit for a novel . A good idea may beworked out and express itself in many forms.

如果我打算写一篇小说，那么我希望它是一篇很有意义的小说而不仅仅是许多的短篇故事。我希望它无论在思想上还是形式上都是真正意义上的短篇小说。如果我要写小说，我一定会想想我的构思是否足够的好，这些想法是不是适合做为小说来写。一个好的构思可以以多种方式自己传达思想。
