托尔金在戒灵上所着笔墨不多，除写过有三个戒灵曾是努曼诺尔贵族以外，他只在《未完成的故事》中提到次席戒灵叫Khamûl 卡姆尔，他是戒灵王的副手，曾是东方蛮人，魔戒故事中在夏尔附近差点追到佛罗多和他同伴的那位戒灵就是他，其余戒灵包括戒灵王在内托尔金都没有任何原始身份设定

　　戒灵王虽没设定原始身份，但参与情节颇多，他在第三纪元1300年建立巫术王国安格玛，与北方王国为敌，经过675年的反复，终于毁灭了北王国阿尔诺，又在2043年和2050年两次向南王国的末代国王埃阿努尔要求一对一的挑战，最后埃阿努尔被戒灵王用诡计将抓走，伊伦迪尔家族的南方世袭就此断绝，王国的带翼王冠存放在埃阿努尔父亲埃阿尼尔二世的陵墓中，直到近千年后才由北方王族的阿拉贡加冕
