操作系统病毒通过用自己的逻辑替换操作系统的某些部分而发作。这些病毒非常难编写，但它们一旦得手就有能力控制整个操作系统。据Digital Dispatch公司称,已知的操作系统病毒程序把大量的攻击逻辑隐藏在被虚假地标明是坏了的磁盘扇区(即这此扇区并非物理损坏，而操作系统认为它们是坏的）。其它的藏身在常驻RAM的程序或驱动程序中，以隐蔽地从内存进行传播或攻击。
