On 11 October 1988, John Russell Taylor wrote in The Times:
Fifteen or twenty years ago we did know fairly clearly what we meant by ‘modern’and what sort of thing, very roughly, we might expect to see if we went to a show which advertised its allegiance to the avant-garde. But now ,ofcourse, we live in a pluralist world where often the most advanced, being probably Post-Modern, is likely to look the most traditional and retrograde.
