Taipei, Dec. 27 (CNA) Two people were killed Tuesday in the strongest earthquake to hit Hengchun township in the southernmost county of Pingtung in 100 years, police said. The dead were identified as Fang Cheng-mao and his sister Fang Shu-chuan. The two siblings and six other family members were trapped in debris when their two-storey home -- a furniture shop -- collapsed in the magnitude 6.7 temblor that struck off southwestern Taiwan at 8:26 p.m. Fang Cheng-mao and Fang Shu-chuan showed no signs of life when they were taken out of the debris by rescuers. Another of their siblings, Fang Shu-hui, was critically injured and rushed to hospital where she remains in intensive care. The four other family members sustained only minor injuries.
