但是我们老师说哪个也不对

我以前知道应该是选1，但是如果选1的话，2不也对么？

1 应该是一种习惯的说法。如果真按语法的话应该说成what the matter was，但日常口语中，人们都说what was the matter.
2 应该是what the population of your city is.
