这里this前面要不要用逗号隔开？？？？
是否能用except for 代替？

but for等同于except for 吗？

目前，我国学英语的学生都这样认为：but for总表示“要不是”，与动词虚拟语气连用；except for总是作“除……之外”解，与动词的陈述语气连用。（《英语语法词典》）四川人民出版社，P.144）上也说：“介词短语but for不表示（except for）“除……之外”，而表示“倘若没有；要不是”的意思。其实这是一个误解。but for与except for都具备上述的两个意思和用法。如：

1. But for you everyone has helped. (LEG)除了你之外，大家都帮忙了。
2. But for a half hour or so for lunch I am here all day. (Yeats)除了大约半小时的午饭时间，我整天都在这里。
3. Except for John, they would all have died. （《初高中英语考点难点详解词典》黑龙江人民出版社，赵振才编著，P.284）要不是因为约翰，他们都已经死了。

《英语世界》1990年第一期第376条答问：

其《指南》的编者认为答案为D（But for），而《英语世界》答者和许梦雄教授则认为B和D都正确。英美语言学家也承认这一点。所以，but for 与 except for 无论是意思还是用法，它们是相同的。

要用逗号。不能用except for 代替。
这句话的意思是这类机器要不是价格太高的话就应当十分适合了。例子But for his help, I may have failed the exam.要不是有他帮忙，我可能考试就不及格了。

but for=without，this前需要逗号，可以代替
