Arranging the robot sensory information into a meaningful form and allowing the mobile robot to make decisions on its own introduce the concept of sensor fusion and model-based robotics. One such approach from the mid 1879’s suggests that mobile robots should use sensors to build a world model and then use the model (map) to plan their actions to navigate or perform other tasks. The concept of sensor fusion requires complex mathematical modeling that demands huge computational power. Moreover, slow performance and sizeable appearance are the main characteristics of this approach. This led to the birth of a new approach based on reactive behaviors that respond to sensory inputs fi2fi. In this context, the term behavior simply describes a routine or set of actions performed by a robot as a response reaction to a given stimulation of its sensors.
