It was the last week of school, and my best friend, Edna, and I were eating lunch and talking about—what else—high school. We were nervous that we d finally be moving from eighth grade to senior high the next fall. But we were worried about the classes, the rules, meeting new kids—all the things we d be dealing with for the first time.
I was afraid that some of my friends and I would be separated from each other because of all the changes. When I talked this to Edna, she said she was feeling the same thing, too.
"We probably won t have the same classes," I told her. "I just don t want to be away from each other."
She put out her little finger to hook with mine. "That won t happen if we don t let it. Let s promise that starting high school won t change our relationship. No matter what!"
I smiled back. "I promise. No matter what, we ll watch out for each other. Nothing will come between us."
