Elevated Cu concentration in forest mosses wasdetected as far as 30–40 km from the smelter in 1995 (Kubin et al. 2000) (Fig. 2). The deposition of Cu was high close to the smelter the bulk deposition being 160 mg m-2 y-1 , and stand throughfall 360 mg m -2y-1 (Derome and Nieminen 1998). At 8 km both the bulk deposition and stand throughfall were ca. 3 mg m -2y-1 . The respective values for Ni close to the smelter were 70 and 140 mg m -2y-1 and for Zn 20 and 40 mg m-2 y-1 , whilst at 8 km the values were ca. one tenth of these.
