本论题的研究主体是“舆论引导”，即党和政府的宣传部门以及新闻媒体，通过控制与营造社会舆论，从而使整个社会或者社会某个局部，保持稳定健康的状态。随着全球化的发展和互联网的普及，各国都面临着如何影响、引导舆论的问题。本论题从大众传媒（电视、报纸、广播、网络）视角出发，对此进行研究。
本论题的研究范围是大学生。中国高校有着相对独立的思想文化氛围，具备强大社会影响力，在现阶段的舆论引导工作中所占的地位极其重要。做好大学生的舆论引导工作，是学术界的重要课题，也是政府部门一直强调的任务。
绪论包括文献综述、研究框架、意义和方法。第一章从宏观上阐述高校概况、舆论环境和大学生的舆论特性，并以案例揭示高校在舆论引导工作中的重要性。第二章以需求、动机、心理和舆论形成为线索，从微观上描述大学生的舆论“接受”模式，并附带解释舆论引导者的动机。第三章为实证研究，调查了上海市重点高校的大学生，进行数据分析，研究了三个问题：舆论引导在大学生中的接受效果、媒体怎样影响舆论引导的接受效果、舆论引导接受效果对大学生价值观的影响。第四章分别为政府、学术界和业界提出对策，并展望未来研究方向。附录包含了实证研究的问卷原稿、设计说明及相关表格。
通过定性与定量研究，我们发现当前针对大学生的舆论引导效果不容乐观，网络媒体的使用也在一定程度上削弱了这一效果。研究也证明，舆论引导的效果，直接影响着大学生对于国家和社会的态度。有关资料及数据，可供政府部门参考，以此改进舆论引导的方式，提高其艺术性和技巧性。
本论题采用了多学科相结合的方法，运用了社会学、统计学等其他学科的理论和技术，对“舆论引导”这一论题进行了创新性的研究探讨。
