Abstract: Hongjian Fang, the dramatis personae of Fortress Besieged, is a typical tragedy image in Chinese literature. There are three factors that lead to his tragedy: cultural thoughts of feudalism hiding inside, vulgar interpersonal relationship and the irrationality of inherent mechanism in transforming society. The interaction among these three factors makes it inevitable for the tragedy of Fang. By the further analysis for his attitude when facing tragedy, we found that it is his ambivalent character flaws that makes his tragedy reach extreme situations. Hence, the tragedy power of Fang’s image has an enormous shaking effect, which is worth thinking.
