都对。
a friend of my mother 对， 母亲的朋友。（母亲只有一个朋友）
a friend of my mother's 对，母亲的朋友中的一个（母亲有很多朋友）

两种都对,但是意思不一样

这两种表达都对, 只是侧重点不一样,前一个不强调数量的多,后者就是我母亲朋友中的一个,一般我们用都采用后边一种.比如a friend of mine.
