英语同汉语以及其他语言一样，都是人类祖先在远古的不同环境里，因为生存和生活的需要，于交际中产生、发展直至固定下来的一种语音、书写符号，同时也不自觉的充当了各民族文化的传承者。这种交际的需要就是刺激人们掌握语言的原因和动力，这种刺激不是桑代克所说的机械的“刺激——反应”过程，而是主、客体之间不断作用和平衡的建构过程，是在一定的语言的情景和文化背景下建构而成的。比如教学UNIT 5 HOW ARE YOU？一句时，学生已经掌握了GOOD MORNING（AFTERNOON）、NICE TO MEET YOU！等几句简单的见面问候语，在长期的交际中学生已厌烦了单调的问候，并且觉得仅仅这两句不能表达自己的意思。于是教师可设计如下情境：老师上课时萎靡不振，打喷嚏，吃药（外部刺激），学生的心里就有了疑问和关心，却又不知道怎么说（心理刺激）。这时一个学生问：（反应）HOW ARE YOU？以此引出新语言。这只是语言的情景，而这句话也有它的文化背景：一般是老朋友之间见面的问候语，初次见面的人不宜使用。在这一建构过程中，我们不难看出，语言不是木乃伊式的干瘪的符号，而是充满情趣的灵动的体验，对语言所包容的情感和文化的体验。这说明，语言不仅仅具有工具性，也具有人文性。
这种人文性不但是学生真正掌握英语、在以后的工作生活中正确自如运用的前提，更重要的是要树立正确的世界观，用健康的心态去看待西方文化和东方文化。所谓的文以载道，如果丢失了这点，语言就只剩下外壳而没有了本质意义。所以，语言首先应该是人文性，其次才是工具性。而人文性中最重要的一点就是文化。
