一个英语语法的问题

Then somebody laughed, then the entire class was laughing,and not in contempt and ridicule.
为什么用"was"?
ridicule前面是不是省略了"in"?怎么使用省略?
用"was"为什么不用"were"?

be doing是表示进行时的，is doing & are doing 是表示现在进行时，was doing & were doing 是表示过去进行时，will be doing 是表示将来进行时。
<br>contempt 和 ridicule都是名字，接在in后面做状语，不用再加个in.
<br>省略没有什么章法可循，大部分和汉语习惯相近，少数不同于汉语习惯，可以个别记忆。

用was和were都可以的。
The whole class was/were told to stay behind after school.
