宗教，从其严格意义来讲，代表的是一种伦理观念，而伦理观念是维系一个社会生存的重要基础，因而也是特定文化的核心部分。宗教在世代的流传中，积淀在文化的底层，成为较难把握的一部分。一般来讲，文化有表层和深层两个层面。在跨文化交流中，表层文化交流较易进行，因其只涉及文化的物质方面；而深层文化则较难沟通与交流，因其涉及到人的精神生活，包括价值观、心理习惯、思维方式、观念定势，等等。表现在语言上，我们几乎可以对等地将移动电话与Mobile phone " ，自来水与“runningwater ”等进行互译，而不产生误解。但对于深层文化的内容就不是那么简单了，只通过翻译是不够的，还要对特定的文化背景有所了解，这样才能深人地理解原文表达的真实含义。宗教属于深层文化，因此若不具备相对应的宗教基本知识，在进行跨文化交流时就难免遇到一些障碍。下面从3 个方面举例说明。
l 容易产生望文生义的错误
时常会看到一些词语带有特定的宗教含义，不了解其相关背景，只按字面理解，易产生错误的联想。例如：( l ) " End of theworld ”世界末日），对中国人来说，看到这个字眼往往会联想到‘大难临头，人类即将毁灭的恐怖时光”，但对西方英语世界的人来说，它同灾难毫无共同之处，只是表示有朝一日现世即将终结，所有人都将接受上帝的最后审判，好人升天堂，坏人下地狱，与汉语里讲的售有善报，恶有恶报，不是不报，时候未到”有类似含义。
( 2 ）如：汉语佛谚中的四大皆空：生即色，色即空。”（般若心经》 ），一般西方人按照字面的理解，很有可能理解为渔为美色( Beauty ) " ，空为虚空ILLUSORY即理解为所有美色都是空虚（ALL beauties ARE lluSORY”，但佛教阐述色为五光十色的现实世界”，空为无常变化”，即万物世界都是变化的。
2 翻译的局限
