因为中国的龙跟西方的Dragon不管是形象、引申义，还是所蕴涵的意义都不一样，而且是本质上的不同，Dragon是象征邪恶的，中国的龙一般是吉祥的象征，当然也有三爪的凶龙。

现在很多人提出不用dragon，而代之以loong,注意不是long！

其实早在2001年出版的THE NEW OXFORD AMERICAN Dictionary © 2001就已经明确将西方Dragon与中国龙统一起来了，其定如下。

有一些人非要说什么“瑞兽”的龙没法与“魔兽”的Dragon共享同一个词，在西方人看来，仅仅用一句简单的话（In European tradition...whereas in the Far East...），便什么问题也没了。
更早的如七十年代出版的《荷兰语大辞典》在其Draak条下也是西方Dragon与中国龙分列义项而兼收并蓄。
