在汽车设计时为使转向车轮具有转向轻便、准确和行驶稳定等特性,在转向车轮上设计有主销内倾角、主销后倾角、车轮外倾角和车轮前束等四项参数,统称为前轮定位。它是一组把转向轮安装成一定的静态几何角度和尺寸的参数值。在这四参数中前两项是由汽车的基础件来保证的,一般不会有较大变化。车辆在使用中由于车架、车轴、转向机构的变形与磨造成损改变了原有的参数值,致使前轮定位失准(主要是外倾角和前束),车辆行驶时转向轮在向前滚动的同时还将产生横向滑移,这就是我们所说的侧滑。侧滑试验台主要用于测量由于车轮外倾角和前束共同作用而形成的侧滑量。只有前束而无车轮外倾角的车辆通过侧滑台

侧滑板移动的方向是由车轮的侧滑方向来决定的,若前轮外倾角产生的侧滑占主导地位,侧滑板是向内移动的;反之,若前束产生的侧滑占主导地位,则侧滑板向外移动。因此,侧滑试验台测量出的值即有方向又有量值。
由上可见侧滑实验台就是由两块尺寸精密、左右可滑动的侧滑板加位移传感器构成的了。为了减小滑板滑动阻力,在两块滑板下的四角装有滚动轴承。
按照机械结构,侧滑台可分为单板式和双板式。
