1976年7月6日，原名Curtis Jackson 的50 Cent出生在著名的贫民窟——纽约的皇后区的Southside Jamaica。从诞生之日，50 Cent的生命就倍受磨难。和Eminem相同的是，50 Cent自幼就生活在一个支离破碎的家庭，父亲似乎从来就没出现过，而母亲只顾一心贩毒，从来没有真正关心过他。在一次黑帮交火中，50 Cent的母亲就在他的面前被枪杀身亡。可怜的50 Cent就这样只能被他的祖父和祖母抚养成人。
由于如此痛苦的童年回忆，使50 Cent的思想充满了对这个社会的憎恶和对现实的不满。早年的他经常惹是生非，与监狱和警察打交道的时间比吃饱饭的日子还多，似乎他从不打算对任何人妥协。爱好说唱的50 Cent也一直苦于没有发挥其才华的舞台。直到1996年，他认识了说唱界元老级乐团 Run-D.M.C.的 Jam Master Jay。看到50 Cent十足的上进心后，Jam Master Jay就毫不犹豫的将他签到自己的JMJ公司。
似乎命运总在和50 Cent过不去，2000年5月24日，在Columbia公司准备为他发行《Power of the Dollar》专辑时，在皇后区的161大街祖母家的门口，50 Cent遭到一名刺客袭击，9毫米手枪的子弹穿透了50 Cent躲靠用的椅背，50 Cent身中九枪，生命垂危，唱片公司闻讯后当即宣布取消了原定的唱片发布计划并终止了和50 cent的合同。然而50 Cent居然奇迹般的活了下来，可是发现他的伯乐Jam Master Jay不久之后就在几乎相同的地方被枪杀。此后正应了“大难不死，必有后福”这句话，经过几年的卧薪尝胆，50 Cent的才华和经历得到了说唱界NO.1——E
