Here's a description to clarify the terms:

Sales: the money you receive from customers for the products they buy from you
Total Costs: all the money you pay to make products and stay in business. There are two kinds of costs, "fixed" and "variable". Fixed costs is money you pay whether you make products or do not make products; it is always the same amount that does not change; for example, salaries and rent. Variable costs increase with the amount of products you make; it is money you pay for every unit of product you make; if you make a lot of products, the variable costs increase; if you make zero products, there are no variable costs, but you will still have to pay "fixed" costs (for example salaries and rent).
Total costs is the total of fixed and variable costs.
Contribution is simply the money you get from sales minus the variable costs for all the products you sold.
