Aspace official in Beijing said that China was losing no time in preparing its first lunar probe (月球探测器), Chang’e I (嫦娥一号). It will be sent off in the second half of 2007.
China’s moon exploration (考察) program is made up of 3 steps: flying around the moon; landing on the moon; coming back to earth with soil and stone from the moon.
Space activities need high technology (技术) and huge amounts of money. Only 48 % of the moon exploration programs in the world have been successful. However, the returns (收益) of projects are huge. They can also bring benefits (利益) to everyday life. For one dollar put in space science, people can get direct or indirect (间接的) returns of at least 7 dollars.
China sent its first manned (载人的) spaceship into space in 2003, making it the third country to put a man into space, after the former Soviet Union (前苏联) and the United States. In October, 2005, China sent its second manned spaceship into space, with two men on board.
The space off
