当今人类面临着人口增长迅速、自然资源短缺、环境污染严重等问题，人类无节制地开发利用自然资源，给自身生存环境造成危机。除了工业、农业等生产过程造成的破坏之外，人们日常生活中制造的大量垃圾也给生态环境造成极大的破坏。家庭日常生活资源消耗的大幅度增加。不仅是由于人口的增加，还由于人均物资消费量的增加。有证据表明，地球上50％以上的人在近40年里依然希望生活水平有所提高，这就意味着将消耗更多的资源，产生更多的废弃物。
在过去的几十年中，环保技术在制造过程中的运用已取得了相当大的进步，如采用适当技术和清洁生产等。现在人们逐渐认识到设计对环保所起的重要作用，“绿色设计”成为关注的焦点。传统的产品设计理论与方法，是以人为中心，从满足人的需求和解决问题为出发点进行的，而无视后续的产品生产及使用过程中的资源消耗以及对环境的影响。因此，对传统产品开发设计的理论与方法必须进行改革与创新。
