Born Earl Simmons, DMX began rapping and beatboxing as a teenager. In 1992, twenty-two year old DMX signed a contract with Columbia Records. His first single “Born Loser” didn't receive much notice, and for this reason Columbia opted to let him go. He has since then jumped from label to label.

In 1998, Def Jam Records released DMX's single “Get At Me Dog”. The song became a hit and allowed DMX's debut album “It's Dark and Hell Is Hot” to reach number one in the pop charts. The album itself earned the artist favorable comparisons with legend Tupac Shakur.
