父亲节的来历

人们在庆祝母亲节的同时，并没有忘记父亲的功绩。1909年就开始有人建议确定父亲节。据说第一个提出这种建议的是华盛顿的约翰·布鲁斯·多德夫人。
多德夫人的母亲早亡，其父承担起抚养教育孩子的重任，把他们培养成人。1909年，多德夫人感念父亲养育之恩，准备为他举行庆祝活动。她想到所有的父亲对家庭和社会的贡献，建议把6
月的第三个星期日定为父亲节。

Father'*'s Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not
established as a holiday in order to help greeting card
manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "father'*'s day" was
first proposed there were no Father'*'s Day cards!
Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a
"father'*'s day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor
her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was
widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd'*'s mother) died in childbirth with
