suffer和stand在句子中如何使用??

我买了一本新版新概念英语有条句子是:
The writer(人名) could not bear it.He could not ______it
A.carry B.suffer C. stand D.lift
答案:c
原因:stand 是bear的同义词，都有忍受的意思。而其他3个选择都没有忍受的意思。
但是suffer也有忍受的意思(百度词典查的),他们两个都是在否定句里用的.大家帮个忙~~~到底为什么??

SUFFER遭到某种疾病的折磨(最常见的用法,短语--suffer from + 某种疾病),经济济损失等等
