1. 这是一个强调句，来加强语气。如果把这句话还原到正常语气：They did not begin to do the homework until late afternoon. 强调句的基本句式：It is 被强调成分 that 其他成分。此句I didn’t do my homework until my mother came back也可以改成强调句：It was not until my mother came back that i did my homework.
4.用ring也没有什么不对。我觉得用ringing是想表示铃声的持续。
9. 为什么加to，搞不明白。reply是个Vt.，而且也作“回答”的意思。唉，中国学生全让语法害了。
