The correct answer is D. I especially don’t understand why the first blank should’nt be filled with ‘take part in’, isn’t birthday party an activity?

ATTEND 出席，比较正式，所以参加什么会议肯定用ATTEND，在外国，生日宴也很正式，应该也可以算入其中。
join,take part in 多指参加什么活动，所以不能选。

解释为 "出席"

take part in=join in 一般指一个团体,不是很正式

take part in一次考试,比赛之类的东西.一般是要报名的东西都用这个
