该宅位于屏山村清溪中流，因正门向东，故得名"东园"。始建于清末光绪年间，距今已有一百多年的历史了，保存尚为完好。
屏山村俗称舒村，聚族而居的舒氏相传有1100多年历史，东园现居主人亦姓舒，其祖先本为商人，这从屋内那雕刻精美，色泽华丽的"商"字门便可看出，后捐官得东园。本是居家之所，现为主人经营饰品、刺绣等的小商店。
东园现为三开间、一天井式，原有一偏厅在文革时被摧毁。房屋小巧，布局典型，雕刻精美。平面为一规整的正方形，柱网以中轴线左右对称分布，上下楼层间柱子对称布置，全为梭柱。大坡屋顶望柱支撑而成。宅内所有砌筑、隔离、装饰材料均为木板、柳条等，不用砖砌，真正体现了中国古代建筑的木构架体系。
东园面积不大，但门楼砖雕精致，门窗扇的镂空木雕精美绝伦，雀替做法古朴而精巧。尤其值得一提的是正对大门的两扇商字门，既体现了作为商人的尊严，又联系了一层、夹层和二层的空间，而且尺度高大、装饰华丽、雕刻精美，极大地丰富了室内空间。
