Comprising 25 branch libraries, the public library network of the City of Milan, the Biblioteche Comunali di Milano (BCM), provides direct and interlibrary loan services throughout the urban area. Circulation also is enhanced by a bookmobile: the Bibliobus service.

The City Central Library of Milan is the centre of the BCM network. The library collections which were almost renewed after the WW2 bombings have been hosted since 1956 in the 17th century building of Palazzo Sormani. This historical palace in Corso di Porta Vittora 6 is home to some important art treasures, such as 18th century stuccoes, frescoes and furniture. The 17th century paintings series of Orpheus charming the animals set all along the conference room walls is particularly famous.
