Well, I'd like to my two cents. I think you would have done a better service to the caller if you answer in the following matter. "He's out. Could I take a message?" Here's the reason why this is a better way. What if the caller calls again later but this person is still not in. A waste of time. Hence, having the person to return his/her call is a better approach.
