a small number of students后面用is 还是are?

a small number of xxxx 都是主语部分，你可以把a small number of 当成和 a few一样的词语，你就很容易判断，a few students are, a few sheep are，这是一样的道理，不要被number 混淆了

你的问题好像很难,其实很简单.

1.a small number of students/a small number of sheep整个都是主语,只不过a small number of在主语中作的是修饰语(定语).

2.后面是用is还是are,你只要看"of"前面的部分就能确定,跟"of"后面无关.

3.如果"of"前面的部分表示的是单数,那么就用is,如果"of"前面的部分表示的是复数,那么就用are

4.看例句:

A lot of students are....(a lot表示的是复数)
One of the students is....(one表示的是单数)

都是are，students和sheep都是复数主语，sheep的复数还是sheep

are
主语的主题是a number of+可数名次的复数时，意思是 大量的。。。

两者都是ARE，因为这是一个a number of sth.的短语；a large number of就是“许多的”。
而用ARE的情况是这样：将a变成the,这样就成了the number of;意思是“什么什么的数量”这时谓语用is，因为主语是数量.

这两个刚开始很容易混淆的，要注意啦！
