翻译是一门艺术，是语言水平和一定的翻译技巧的结合。我所翻译的这篇文章是来自于1996年1月15日《American news and world》的社会评论文章《美国赌博热》。本文从中立的角度对美国20世纪90年代的赌博热以及反赌博进行了评述。

对我个人来说，翻译本文的主要难题有以下几个：一、词义的选择，同一个英文单词有很多个不同的中文译意，很难选择，当然在充分理解文意并联系上下文，再给出一个恰当的中文词汇才能准确表达作者的真实意义，最主要的一个例子是本文的题目中的“Gambling”意为。。。。。。在选择时，我就在两个词之间徘徊：一是“赌博”，另一个是“博彩”。“赌博”为非法，而“博彩”则还包含了国家依法发行的彩票。在通读全文之后，发现文中也提到了美国的彩票业，所以最终“博彩”一词。二、名称的翻译，是以音译为主，常用的名字还好可以在网上找到通用的译名，如州名等等。而遇到有些人名却只有根据其发音规则写出音标，再找相近发音的汉字组成中文译名，如Fahrenkopf，在经过反复斟酌后决定译为FeiRuiKePu。三、词认识，但组成句子就不知道如何是好了，这是翻译中所面临的最大问题。在面对一词多译的同时还有词与词组成句的问题。这样的句子有“meddle in matters best left to states”, “end by liking all undertakings in which chance plays a part”, “on the edge of French Quarter”, “that turn into broken promises”, “was letting its downtown die”, “from funding treatment programs to training employees”, “w
