我想问的是为什么?

go to pieces是崩溃的意思，难道仅仅因为“他走了一切都会崩溃”，所以“他就一定不会走”？

按句意解释：他一旦离开 所有的事情都会瘫痪下来
既然是选择题 我们就可以一个个排除 四个选项看下来 确实只有D意思最切合
也不妨设想下这样一个场景
A对B谈到另外一个人 “He is not going to leave,there is nothing to worry about.As you know , if he left,everthing would go to pieces."
所以由此从句意上理解D选项也是可行的。
