As we know, competition guarantees nothing but itself. I have nothing against competition per se, but I don't accept it as a value. It is, instead, a tool that I find incredibly useful and significant. I don't accept it as something natural in that while competition may occur in nature, it is not comparable to much of the competition that we talk about among people, at least in the political, economic, and even business senses.

There are a couple of contemporary reasons for this misconception about competition. One is the idea that market competition is like a race or a sport. "May the best person win!" Many times, we know what the sports competition is determining--the fastest person or the team that scores the most. The "best" then is defined by the competitive victory. Certainly, sometimes, the better team can have a bad day and lose, which is mitigated by its season performance. But in sports, that really is
