艾里奥特是一个充满着幻想的小男孩，有个老想着捉弄他的哥哥和一个不太会讲话的小妹妹歌蒂，兄妹三个和不久前离异的母亲一起生活。由于工作忙碌加上心情不好，母亲时常忽视对孩子们的关爱和沟通。
ET是一个被同伴不小心留在地球上的小外星人，却幸运地被善良的小艾里奥特发现，他瞒着妈妈收留下孤独无助的ET，给他吃巧克力，还把他介绍给自己的狗狗、哥哥和妹妹。虽然语言上ET和艾里奥特还无法沟通，但是他们都有着一颗善良敏感、渴望着爱和呵护的童心。他们成了好朋友。
直到有一天，ET不可避免地被大人们发现了，他们如临大敌，警察、军队、FBI蜂涌而至，他们无情地抓走了ET，想把他当成试验品进行研究。
艾里奥特在哥哥及同伴们的帮助下，费尽周折将ET从研究中心救出，终于让ET带着对地球小朋友美好的友谊返回自己的星球
