With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-

This poem was written in 1914 by Laurence.
and by chance if u are interested in history, ww1 starts from 1914 to 1918. So this poem indeed reflects the attitudes of UK civilians on ww1 by that time. More details arise that the Black Hand event occured on June 28 1914, whereas thanksgiving is 4 month after which is October.

1) Obviously the subject of this poem is, as Omen said, " to mourn over the fallen soilders" in the battleground of ww1.
2) To my first expression, the poet mingles all kinds of feelings: there are sorrow, admiration, excitement (yes war is exciting to some ppl!) and serenity. No war would be perfect but yet they have to fight for UK's honor and freedom. Feel the author's words:
-sorrow: "There is music in the midst of desolation"
-admiration: "They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe"
