Interestingly, not every language has this full range of relative clause types. This led Ed Keenan & Bernard Comrie (Keenan & Comrie 1977) to formulate the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy (NPAH), a hierarchy of grammatical relations which are hypothesised to be universal primitives from which the configurational structure of languages is derived. The grammatical theory associated with the NPAH, namely Relational Grammar, explicitly opposed Chomsky’s view that grammatical relations can be derived from syntactic configurations, e.g. Subject = NP/S or Object = NP/VP. Keenan & Comrie tried to show that there are a variety of implicational relationship in the hierarchy.
