大连市地处欧亚大陆东岸，中国东北辽东半岛最南端，东濒黄海，西临渤海，南与山东半岛隔海相望，北依辽阔的东北平原。是东北、华北、华东以及世界各地的海上门户，是重要的港口、贸易、工业、旅游城市。
全市总面积12574平方公里，其中老市区面积2415平方公里。区内山地丘陵多，平原低地少，整个地形为北高南低，北宽南窄；地势由中央轴部向东南和西北两侧的黄、渤海倾斜，面向黄海一侧长而缓。长白山系千山山脉余脉纵贯本区，绝大部分为山地及久经剥蚀而成的低缓丘陵，平原低地仅零星分布在河流入海处及一些山间谷地；岩溶地形所处可见，喀斯特地貌和海蚀地貌比较发育。
