Investigations involve circumstances.
其余的都是修饰成分。
楼主觉得相似的可能是circumstances different from adult cases这段。
这是后置定语，可以理解为circumstances (which are )different from adult cases.
还有：
bones (which are) characteristic of repeated and severe beating.
确实，需要在different前加个is
