Carnivorous ‘cowboy’ fungi that lassoed their victims about 100 million years ago have been discovered trapped in amber alongside the microscopic creatures they preyed on.
The fossil fungi, found in southwest France, are the earliest known examples of carnivorous fungi and are thought to represent a period when the species were evolving from a wet to a drier environment.
Fungi preserved in the amber branched their projections, called hyphae, from which several microscopic rings formed.
Observations of similar traps used by carnivorous lifeforms lead researchers to believe that tiny nemotode worms would have been trapped as the rings tightened round them.
Particles visible on the rings suggest that the fungi exuded a sticky substance which helped to trap the prey, which it then digested.
