安德斯·摄尔修斯（Anders Celsius，1701-1744）将一大气压下的水的沸点规定为0℃，冰点订为100℃，两者间均分成100个刻度，和现行的摄氏温标刚好相反。直到1744年才被卡尔·林奈修成现行的摄氏温标。

1954年的第十届国际度量衡大会特别将此温标命名为“摄氏温标”，以表彰摄氏的贡献。
