For each of the following, state if the situation describes an activity in descriptive statistics or statistical inference. Explain your answer briefly. If the situation describes a statistical inference, clearly describe the parameter.

a> The following statements were made by a research firm: Twenty-five percent of XX city adults believe that they will never be able to afford a house in XX city. This estimate is accurate to within 3% with 95% confidence.

b>A sample of 500 XX school students is selected. It was determined that the average number of courses that these students take is 3.2. The fewest number if courses taken is 1 and the lasgest number of courses taken is 6. More than 60% of these students take at least 3 courses.

For a, it is an example of statistical inference as the statements made cannot be taken as factual evidence. In addition, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing are the two most common forms of statistical inference.

Situation b is an example of descriptive statistics since it provides the mean, and the range of the data. Descriptive statistics simply refer to things such as mean, mode, median etc, that is obtained from the data pooled.
