5.1. Experimental setup
We applied the fabricated hydrophilic FAP to a die steel. Fig. 6 shows the polishing machine used for the experiment. Table 2 shows the conditions of the experiment. The polishing pad was developed from FAP, and a polishing tool head that is easily attached to the spindle of machining center was specially developed. It is composed of a universal joint, ball spindle shaft, and elastic backing material. FAP with grain sizes of #100, #600 and #1000 were investigated for coarse, medium, and fine polishing. Each polishing was performed by a six-time travel on the same area. The surface roughness was measured with a stylus (Taylor-Hobson) and the surface topography was observed by optical micro-scope. The polishing characteristics of thermo-curable FAP (3M Co., #100, #400, #800, #1800), which has been broadly used, and the hydrophilic FAP were comparatively studied.
