不加冠词意义更好一些
因为

the last and fortieth 表示 最后一课就是第四十课
the fortieth and last 也可以

如果是 the last and the fortieth 意思就成了
我们要学最后一课和第四十课

这个意思显然没有上面的 “我们要学最后一课，即第40课” 通顺

但是序数词前要加the这个怎么解释：

last 和 fortieth 用and连接
都被the修饰
在这个特殊的句子中可以这样用
因为两个都加了the像我上面说的 容易误解意思

不要 因为lesson用的是单数 可以看出最后一课就是第四十课
所以只用一个the

要:the
因为后面有了修饰语 fortieth
fortieth为序数词,序数词前面一般加the

序数词fortieth前面必须加冠词
